Really quickly before everybody goes away for Christmas, I took a quick look at Dustin McGowan and Brandon Morrow. I only used a few starts (important distinction, Morrow threw MUCH harder out of the bullpen) but in terms of their stuff, they're like twins.

Look at that! Same dudes! McGowan looks to throw a two-seamer that Morrow doesn't have in his arsenal. Morrow's change is a little more 12-6, which means very little to me right now. That is the big pitch for both these guys, not to mention every league average pitcher around. What about the old-fashioned break chart?

That's a crazy amount of break on some of Morrow's curveballs. In these instances there isn't a lot of side-to-side movement on his slider either. Looks like what they say is true: he is absolutely in love with his fastball. Balance friend, you need balance.
Sorry this post is a little light on content, but what do we think?

ReplyDeleteThis is perfect timing! The Jay need a McGowan doppleganger since he's all but shevled anyway, and it looks like Morrow will fit the bill quite nicely.

Hey, on the bright side if they both end up falling apart we can take all the parts that still work, affix them together (using stem cells of course) and insert Brustin McMorrow into our starting rotation.

ReplyDeleteSo who do you want in the starting 5, and who's in the 'pen? I'd prefer Purcey in the front 5 with Morrow given time in AA to work on his other pitches. In the 'pen, i like Frasor, Downs, and Accardo as leverage pitchers, with Tallet, Roenicke, Camp and Hayhurst as the other guys. i don't trust Janssen or Carlson anymore.
ReplyDeleteNice work! I'm surprised how similar their pitches are considering that AA compared Morrow to Burnett. His delivery is a little Burnett-like, but his pitches are so much like McGowan's I'll have to change my mind now. Let's just hope he gains some McGowan-like control.

ReplyDeleteIf Dusty could ever get himself healthy, what does everyone think of converting him into a closer? With all of the SP talent we're supposed to have, perhaps that will keep him healthy?
ReplyDeleteI've heard that suggested before, and it does make some sense for the duration of his cheap/cost controlled years IF he can't stick in the rotation. My concern is his inability to throw strikes consistently, basically the only thing* that really matters out of the bullpen.
