Jays, Rays Continue Huge Series in Toronto

The first place Tampa Bay Rays and the closer to last place than third place Toronto Blue Jays continue their pivotal yet meaningless series at the Rogers Centre tonight. The Jays come in on a hot streak, having defeated two of the worst teams in the American League in 6 of their last 9 games. Jays fans remain confident that their team can continue to climb the standings, in spite of the sheer quantity (not to mention the quality) of teams above them.

Jays GM JP Riccardi has been quoted in recent days saying the team will not trade AJ Burnett, and was unlikely to make any moves at all. He even trotted out Swirsk the Monkey to repeat his "we like our team line" until every last journalist had tuned him out. Despite having functional veterans such as David Eckstein, Gregg Zaun wasting away on the bench and non-functional veterans like Kevin Mench playing odd days, the GM insists that this is his team. One he's confident will continue to sell tickets well into September.

  1. don't lose faith, man. we've got 17 games against the AL East in August. you're telling me the way doc and AJ are pitching that we can't be within 4 games of the wildcard heading into september?

is that what you're telling me?

  2. I'm telling you that only one of the Yankees, Rays, A's, Rangers, Twins, Tigers and Blue Jays is going to make the playoffs. And it isn't going to be the Blue Jays.

I haven't lost faith, I like to think I see this situation for what it is. I have lost faith in JP doing something, even minor, to help next season and forsake this one.

  3. wasn't there some recent marketing campaign: "Why not us?"

all i want is meaningful baseball in september. i don't think we're a ways off that yet.

don't you think that if JP could get something half-decent for guys like Eck and Zaun that he would pull the trigger? Sure, an asset is an asset, but if the Yanks are offering us a complete douchebag of a prospect for Zaun, why should JP take it and help out the Yankees? What does that do for us?

I think if JP could trade these guys, he would. Perhaps he's getting completely lowballed in every offer.

i don't know. i just don't think this is over yet. we've got to keep doc happy, that's important. trading guys and looking towards next season might not be the best thing to do in the eyes of Doc. with AJ and Halladay we've got arguably the best 1-2 punch in the AL. if we're close enough in september, we could run a 4-man rotation, no?

    Believe.

  4. I have nothing better to do with my time than to sit here and hope the Jays can pull something out of their asses.

  5. I know I've got a blog of my own and shit, but I'd like ownership to know that I'd accept a trade to the Ghostrunners.
